Before one of my friends from Seoul came to visit I heard about 해장국, hangover soup.
I hadn’t tried it before and for some reason I got it in my head that I really wanted to try it.
Then, coincidentally the restaurant we went to had a sign on the wall advertising they had this soup. Even better they had 선치–congealed beef blood.
Here’s the conversation we had with the server when we ordered.
Us: . . .we’d like 해장국–actually 선치해장국.
Server: Have you ever had it before?
Jamie: No, why, is it good?
Server: To Korean people it is. We like it.
Jamie: Well that’s good cause they’re both Korean so we’ll like it then.
Server: Oh, you speak Korean? (looking very excited) Can I speak Korean to you?
We said yes and he became a different guy; friendly, carefree, happy. The next time we came back he remembered us and even almost joined us after at the local 술집.
I found this conversation hilarious; only Korean people eat this soup. How funny. But he must’ve had others order it and then tell him they hated it.
The three of us (2 Koreans and one Chinese) loved the soup so much we were pretty much fighting for the last spoonfuls. It’s one of my new favorite things to eat.
