미역국 (seaweed soup)

A friend came over and we made 미역국 and watched the movie “마더” or Mother (with 원빈!), the title of which is a play on words another friend told me; 마더 is the Konglish word for “mother” in Korean. The Korean word is 엄마 (omma) or 어머니 (omunni). “마더” sounds like the way Korean people pronounce “murder.”

미역국 조리법 (seaweed soup recipe)

This is what you use to make the soup, 미역

Soak it in water and let it soften and separate.

Peal most of the fat off the beef brisket. Only use beef brisket. We had to ask the meat counter to cut some for us. We got 1 lb but had some leftover. You can also use this beef for 됀장찌개.

Chop the beef brisket into small pieces.

Strain the seaweed and squish the water out of it.

Put the seaweed and 참기름 sesame oil in the pot and cook it.

Then add chopped garlic.

Add the meat. But beforehand add about 1 tablespoon of soy sauce to the meat and swish it around on the meat. 국간장 soy sauce works best.

Swish all of these ingredients together around in the pot on low heat. For me that is 4.

Cover the pot after you add the meat. Condensation is good.

Cook 10-15 minutes.

Add water and then cook more. Cover. Let the soup cook down.

Add salt if needed for taste.

Our final product looked like this.
