Republican Senator Sponsors Bill for Adoption of North Korean Orphans

Apr 12, 2011 Late last month Senator Richard Burr (R- North Carolina) sponsored a bill that, if passed, would expedite the adoption process for Americans seeking to adopt orphaned children of North Korean refugees, reports the Korea Times in Oakland. 

The “North Korean Refugee Adoption Act of 2011” calls for the Secretary of State to devise a “comprehensive strategy” for the adoption of North Korean orphans living outside of North Korea, a majority of them in China.

China maintains a policy of repatriating North Korean refugees, who Beijing regards as economic migrants.

According to North Korean law, all those caught leaving the country face imprisonment and possible execution.
