Ko and his wife had had three deaf children — a son and another daughter — but couldn’t afford to take care of them on their farm in the country. They eventually placed all three in an orphanage in Seoul where they made frequent visits.
On one such occasion, Webb’s father went with his sister and was instructed to sign some papers that he was told would keep his children well fed and provided for at the facility. On his next visit, his daughter was gone. Unbeknownst to him, he had been conned into consenting to her U.S. adoption.
